The is a wonderful book for intermediate to advanced pen and ink artists looking for a thorough explanation of materials and a great discussion of the methodology of creating fantastic pen and ink artwork. It is packed with a wide variety of examples that are sure to inspire you.

The book starts out with a large (almost 50 pages) and excellent overview of materials and tools. I love it that the author takes the time to discuss numerous brands of pens, inks and papers instead of just generalizing them.

The following section focuses on ink drawing techniques. There is a good discussion of gray tones, parallel lines, value changes, hatching, cross-hatching and patterns. Then there are a few demonstrations of brush techniques such as laying a wash and using white on toned paper. Mixed media demos mixing wax crayons and acrylic with ink are also here as well as scratchboard and practice exercises.

The basic elements of drawing follow, including things like texture, shape, volume,... Read more

      5.0 out of 5 stars What a great book, June 18, 2007

This review is from: The Pen and Ink Book: Materials and Techniques for Today's Artist (Watson-Guptill Materials and Techniques) (Paperback)
There are so many books on pen and ink with the most boring and insipid illustrations that it's a wonder anyone with any artistic sensitivity would ever venture into the medium at all. This book is a wonderful exception to that pedestrian norm.

The author is a master in the medium of pen and ink. He's not just a person who can hatch until his eyes bleed but he has something to bring to art besides a laborious technique. This guy is an artist not just a technician! It's not that he doesn't know technique! He knows everything I could imagine to ask about the subject and more.

When I first started looking for a decent book on pen and ink I was hoping to find a book just like this. Don't waste your time on the books that have all the excitement of watching paint dry. This is one for the serious artist's bookshelf. I can't believe it's not in reprint from the publisher.

This book presents procedures you can try at home to better your technique no matter what level you're at. The author generously shares his accumulation of knowledge. Very modern and contemporary. The illustrations are inspiring, you'll want to drop everything and start your own drawings!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Line, December 27, 2007
These are the best (really only) pens if you want a precise line. They are great for contour drawings, cross hatching, and I like to write little notes with them. The precision of the line lends an austere gravity to little notes.

You have to draw relatively slowly or they skip, so if you draw with a gesture don't bother. They work a little like a fountain pen, and ink wells up into the tube that you draw from, so if you touch the area just above the drawing tube you are likely to get ink on you hands. I like the closeness with the materials, but you might not. These are for a serious draftsperson and not a hobbiest.

These are my favorite pens on earth.

I found these pens in another location on amazon where they are less expensive:

5.0 out of 5 stars Koh-I-Noor Radiograph Pens - pros and cons and general upkeep, February 3, 2010
      By
This review is from: Koh-I-Noor Rapidograph Stainless Steel 7 Pen Artists Set (Office Product)
I have seen a lot of reviews on these pens. Almost everyone agrees that they are wonderful pens and that they last for years. A lot of people continue to complain about cleaning the pens, and about the fragility of the tip of the pen (you can bend the wire inside the tip if you aren't careful while cleaning it, rendering the pen useless).

I've only been using Radiograph pens for three years now, but I use them constantly. I draw with them and, for the past two years, I have used them to take hundreds of pages of notes in class. I write with them instead of using regular pens. Using these pens requires a somewhat gentle hand. If you don't use them properly, you are likely to break them and you will wear them down very quickly.

As far as claims in other reviews that the pens stop working or that the ink clogs constantly - I have not ever had a problem with this.
If you leave ink in the pens and you do not use them for a number of months, you will have to... Read more

I've been using Koh-I-Noor Rapidograph pens for over two decades. They are one of the most reliable brands on the market - if you clean them regularly and follow the simple instructions included for maintenance, they will last for years. I replace mine about once every six years. These pens produce a clean, uniform line which is excellent for crosshatching, stipple drawing and pointillism, and great for general sketching. The ink is water soluble, which allows for some nice wash effects when necessary.
